Know Your Place

Thursday, April 6

This is what you'll want to be doing tomorrow night, if you don't want to be, like, right out of the loop:

We've been organising this for months, and it's going to be great. A whole night of live music and performance in aid of the Free West Papua Campaign. Admittedly I've never actually heard of any of the acts, but then I'm too old and deeply unhip. And anyway, I didn't organise that bit! What matters is that it will be fab, as well as useful, and that you should be there, if you don't want to miss out on the event of the year.

If you have to babysit the kids, or you live somewhere silly like Leeds (sorry Alice), there is some small consolation: you can listen to the whole thing online here. See how painfully contemporary we are? You know you would be a fool to miss out.

'SILLY'? You've spouted some rather dubious opinions previously Mr Kingsnorth but calling Leeds silly? I am in Leeds right now, and have been for some time, and I can assure you it's anything but silly. It's grey, it's cold and it's a bit smelly. I can see some chimneys and a McDonalds. Please let me know which bit of Leeds is silly so I can move there immediately. Thanks.

and have a good time tomorrow.

Hmmm. Perhaps you're right. I know some silly people there, but perhaps this is not enough. Still, I reckon it mujst be your responsibility to up the silly quotient, since you live there. :-)

Silliness in Leeds is largely concentrated in a place called Archway on Roundhay Road, which is where I work. Feel free to drop in, Anjo.

Paul you're right. I feel a bit silly now. Which must be a step in the right direction!! I will try and do my part.

I'll have to check this Archway place out then (I used to live near the fforde green but haven't been for ages) - I'll be the one with the orange hair and very long shoes. x

I went to Merdeka. To be honest the music wasn't great. The West Papua singers were head-slumpingly mournful, and the Brazilain band was pretty non descript. And if you hung around til after midnight the whole place became a drug-crazed, get-off-your-tits and forget what this is all about anyway kind of event. However the drummers were fantastic and it's definitely a great place to go and go mad for a bit. Just a slightly odd venue for a Free West Papua campaign I thought.

You'd hardly expect the Papuan singers to be jumping all over the place when they were singing about genocide and the death of their loved ones?!?!
